Chapter 15: Raffle

Constantly playing Oreo mental movies to keep him out of trouble was exhausting me. I had to get him to at least want to stay with our humans, let alone tell him he was a Kaxian!

And now he was at the back door, begging to be let out. If I didn’t go with him, then he would run away again for sure.

Running to the back door to go along, I jumped over a bunch of empty boxes that hadn’t been there before. I wracked my brain for things that would make Oreo want to stay with us. I had an idea: I could share my friends with him! I vowed right then that I would introduce Oreo to Lido, Heg, and the whole pack. But that would take time. I needed him to want to stay right now.

And then I had it: wouldn't Oreo love to wage war on the Nique neighbors with me?

Yeah!

A common enemy should bring the two of us closer together. Maybe I could not only make him want to stay with our humans, but also befriend him, so he would listen to me about being a Kaxian: kill two birds with one stone.

Our humans were smarter than I gave them credit for. I should have known. They came out to the backyard with us. Yeah, it was winter, but except in the mountains, a freeze is rare in Southern California. Our humans sat down on the patio furniture to keep an eye on Oreo so he couldn’t dig out again.

Whew. That was a relief. I wouldn’t have to be quite so vigilant. I could actually sleep sometimes. The humans being out here was OK so far as my plan went, too. They wouldn’t understand anything we or the Niques said, of course.

Our Nique neighbors did not disappoint me. They came out through their doggy door and talked at us through the wooden backyard fence. They knew we couldn’t get to them, so they felt free to say whatever would annoy us the most. Fred and Cherry were just as provoking as ever.

“Aw, isn’t that cute?”

“Raffle and Oreo, paling around in their yard together.”

“How was your little field trip, Oreo?”

“Did you get scared and run on home?”

“Oh yeah, that’s right: some grown-ups brought you home!”

“If I didn’t know you were three years old, I’d think you were just a puppy, too!”

Those little dogs could be so petty! I hoped Oreo wasn’t too upset by them. To show him my support, I looked over at Oreo and rolled my eyes.

Still ignoring me, Oreo lifted his leg and relieved himself on a bush. And another bush. And another.

I thought to myself, Oreo has shown me that he loves a good debate. I have to admit: he’s a good debater. I bet if I engage the Niques in a lively debate, Oreo won’t be able to stay out of it.

So as not to confuse the humans, I lifted my leg over a few bushes, too. And a few more.
